MARCH 2020: A Very Special Mother’s Day

A Very Special Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day was extra special this year. My daughter, Francesca, and I drove to Dallas to see my mother at her senior living community. The Personal Care Home where she lives scheduled thirty-minute time slots to each family to do a porch visit. I had not seen her in person since early March. In the past two months we missed celebrating my 60th birthday, her 90th birthday and Passover which are all events that we would have celebrated together. Instead, our conversations have been over FaceTime or via window visit phone calls orchestrated by my brother and sister. Although I would have loved to give her a giant hug, I was just so overjoyed to see that she was healthy and safe.

Senior living communities are continuing to limit the number of staff to only those essential for the health and safety of their residents. Family members can only visit their loved ones through a pane of glass. They are working tirelessly to help connect via technology i.e. FaceTime, Zoom calls, and arranged safe practice visitations.

The true heroes in this story are the caregivers. They have been vigilant, present, and have put the safety of their residents as priority. Sending giant thanks to Kareen, Judy, Kay, and Mariam.
